Married Vine
Neferiye

Inspired by Bodrum’s 2,500-year-old winemaking tradition, Neferiye carries forward the ancient wine culture of Halikarnassos’ slopes with nature-integrated and minimal-intervention methods.

We continue the region’s winemaking heritage, dating back to the Carian and Leleg eras, through our own discoveries of Kanlıkara, Panık, and Ak Üzüm grape varieties.

Native grapes, growing by embracing the trees, ferment with their natural yeasts and each year develop a unique character that reflects the climate, season, and soil.

For us, wine is a shared expression of nature, earth, and time. Neferiye is a way to share this expression and to tell a meaningful story at the table.

What is Married Vine?

“Married Vine” is a poetic expression within the agroforestry approach that describes integrated farming systems in which vines grow in harmony with nature and other plant species.

In this understanding, vines are not cultivated alone; they coexist with trees, shrubs, aromatic plants, and ground cover species, forming a structure that supports one another and enriches the ecosystem.

This “married” or co-living system enhances soil health, promotes biodiversity, and offers a more resilient and sustainable agricultural model.

What is Old Vine?

Old vine typically refers to grapes harvested from vines that are 35 years or older, and it is an expression associated with quality in the world of wine.

As vines age, they produce less fruit, but the grapes they yield offer more concentrated aromas, depth, and balance. With roots that reach deep into the soil, old vines reflect the characteristics of the terroir more distinctly, resulting in wines with greater character and complexity.

The Old Vine Registry is an open-access international database that documents vineyards with vines aged 50 years and older. Launched by the California-based Historic Vineyard Society, this platform aims to preserve and bring visibility to historic vineyards before they are lost.

Producers, wine enthusiasts, and researchers can use this resource to explore the age, grape varieties, and history of vineyards around the world.

From Turkey, Neferiye’s Agroforestry Vineyard, dating back to 1920, is also listed on this platform and is recognized among internationally known old vineyards.

Grapes

Panık, Kanlıkara, and Ak Üzüm are certified local grape varieties native to the Bodrum-Milas subregion of the Aegean Region.

Panık

Panık is a grape variety with a pink to light reddish hue (similar in tone to Pinot Grigio), characterized by its thin skin, loosely branched conical clusters, and small to medium-sized berries. It is a medium-tannin grape variety.

Harvest typically continues from late September to mid-November. The soils where it is grown are sandy, loamy, and gravelly, with a fertile and untouched structure underlain by a clay layer.

The region lies at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level and experiences a harsh climate with hot days, cold nights, and severe winters.

Among the grape’s notable features are floral aromas such as bitter almond and jasmine on the nose. On the palate, flavors of blood grapefruit, cotton candy, and mandarin stand out, with a finish that reveals a distinct orange peel note.

Harvest takes place in early October. The soils in which it grows are sandy, loamy, and gravelly, supported by a clay layer, and are both fertile and untouched.

The region’s climate is marked by harsh winters and snowfall, with hot days and cold nights; the elevation is around 900 meters above sea level.

The grape’s general characteristics include aromas of red fruits, light black pepper, hibiscus, and poppy flower on the nose. On the palate, flavors of sour cherry, tea leaf, and pine resin are prominent, accompanied by notes of poppy syrup.
